Urea is a waste product formed in the liver when proteins are broken down into their constituent amino acids. This process initially produces ammonia, which is then converted to urea, a waste product that is less toxic to the body. This test is used to measure the amount of urea in the blood. Sometimes the urea nitrogen (BUN)/creatinine ratio is calculated to help determine the cause of elevated urea levels.
