Accredited test
Cortisol is a crucial hormone in the metabolism of proteins, lipids and carbohydrates. It regulates blood glucose concentrations, contributes to the maintenance of blood pressure and regulates the immune system. Most of the cortisol in the blood circulates bound to proteins; only a small percentage circulates free and is biologically active. Free cortisol is excreted in the urine and is also present in saliva. This test measures the amount of cortisol in blood, urine or saliva.
